The Bridge was built as part of a larger railway system intended on supplying the expanding Japanese army during the Second World War. The Japanese built this 415km railway which stretches from Kanchanaburi all the way to the Burmese border now known as Myanmar. Whilst building this railway 13,000 allied prisoners of war and over 80,000 Asian coolies lost their lives.
Although the bridge which was made famous by the 1950 film “The Bridge over the River Kwai” was destroyed by the allies towards the end of the war this section has now been replaced. You are able to ride along part of the original route and travel through places like “Hell Fire Pass” a 500m section of Track that runs through solid rock that had to be pounded out by POWs, they did this using no more than picks, hammers and their bare hands.
There are various memorials dedicated to the thousands who lost their lives here. The area known as Hell Fire Pass was cleared by 1,000 Australian and British soldiers and took 12 weeks to clear. Visit The Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum.
